Porto were lucky to squeeze through to the quarter final of the Portuguese cut, after they won a penalty shootout Lisbon club Belenenses.

Uruguayan left-sided midfielder Cristian Rodriguez scored a late equaliser to take the match to extra time at 2-2, after Belenenses' Brazilian striker Lima had scored twice, either side of Falcao's goal for Porto.

Amazingly both keepers managed to save 4 of the first 9 penalties from each side, with Devic of Belenenses and Ernesto Farias of Porto both missing the target as well to leave the shootout at 4-4 after 9 each.

As the man who'd scored the equaliser Cristian Rodriguez was sent off in the first half of extra time, it meant that after 10 penalties each the players started to take them again. Bruno Alves, who'd been the first to miss in the shootout, keeping his nerve second time round to take the shootout score to 6 each from 11.

In the end it was the unfortunate substitute Romario who missed the crucial penalty; with Farias able to make up for his earlier miss with the winning spot kick to send Porto through.

Haiti may not be instantly recognised for their football, though they did qualify for the 1974 World Cup when legend Manno Sanon scored against both Italy and Argentina before they were knocked out, finishing bottom of a very tough group that also included Lato and Deyna's Poland.

However, now the eyes of the World are focused on Haiti again, with retired legends such as Zinedine Zidane, Fernando Hierro, Manuel Rui Costa, Pavel Nedved and even Pierluigi Colina (in a refereeing capacity of course) putting on the boots once again to play alongside current stars like Kaka in a match to raise money for the Haiti earthquake appeal. The match will be played at Benfica's Stadium of Light, between a World all-Stars team and a Benfica all-stars team.

Congratulations to Benfica for such a great idea; the club clearly impressing both on and off the pitch as they remained tied on points with Sporting Braga in the Portuguesa Liga last after last weekend's 5-0 away victory.

However getting back to what is more important, according to the UN the horrendous earthquake and aftershocks that hit Haiti are said to have left 2 million Haitians requiring food assistance, meaning a staggering 20% of the population need urgent help.

Rodrigo Possebon back at United after poor Braga loan spell

Rodrigo Possebon has been allowed to leave Sporting Braga to join back up with parent club Manchester United.

The 20 year old Brazilian defensive midfielder has struggled with just one match for Braga, when he was substituted in the first half against Elfsborg back in an early August, Europa League qualification fixture.

Possebon has played 8 games for United in all competitions, but will no doubt have fallen well behind the likes of Darron Gibson and Tom Cleverley in the central-midfield pecking order.

Benfica signed Real Madrid defensive midfielder Javi Garcia for a fee of £6.2 million.

The 22 year old has real strength, nice touch in midfield and a good passing game. He's got a little bit of pace and strength in the air, but isn't the greatest tackling, player more as a playmaker or as a player used to sweep up the ball in midfield. With just 2 goals in 40 games in La Liga, both for Osasuna, Garcia clearly isn't the greatest shooter on goal.

Javi Garcia has been recruited to play as playmaker alongside and just infront of strong Brazilian international Ramires. Garcia will face competition for first team action with the Portuguese side able to field talented midfielders Hassan Yebda and Carlos Martins, though the price-tag on Garcia would suggest he'll play, at least at the start of the season.

Falcao will probably partner Hulk up front, with Ernesto Farias and Wason Renteria waiting in the wings in an all South American strike force.

Alves is a very strong robust centre-back, who is also quite a bit quicker than either Terry or Carvalho. However he is not technically as good a defender as Carvalho and can mistime the odd tackle. Unfortunately for the Portuguese man he will be most known to English fans for the back-pass he laid into Wayne Rooney that went on be costly as United won on away goals rule over the two legs. Alves like Alex also has a very powerful shot from distance and even takes the odd Roberto Carlos style free-kick.

A top quality winger, though he won’t offer much defensively. He'd appear to be first choice ahead of countryman Mariano Gonzalez.
